American Tobacco Trail Construction Notice

Drainage improvements along the Wake County portion of the American Tobacco Trail are scheduled to begin on Monday, April 20. Work will take place at multiple locations along the trail with anticipated completion by June 19. There may be partial or complete closures of certain sections during this project. Please follow instructions from onsite personnel.

The New Hill parking area (1309 New Hill-Olive Chapel Road) is also scheduled to close for several days during this improvement project. Thank you for your patience and cooperation.

Here is the anticipated schedule for the project. Click on "General location" under each section for a Google Maps link.

April 27–May 8:

  • MM 18.75 – south of the Wimberly Road parking area
  • General location
  • MM 17.75 – near White Oak Elementary School
  • General location
  • Trail open during work; temporary closures possible
  • Grading and ditch work
     

May 4–15:

  • MM 17.5 – White Oak Church Road trailhead/trail intersection
  • General location
  • Trail open during work; temporary closures possible
  • Grading and ditch work
     

May 11–15:

  • MM 20 – US 64 tunnel entrances
  • General location
  • Note: This trail section will be closed from May 11–14.
  • Grading and ditch work
     

May 26–28:  UPDATED AS OF 5/18/26

  • MM 21.5 – near New Hill-Olive Chapel Road parking area (southern end of trail)
  • General location
  • Note: This trail section and the New Hill parking area will be closed May 26–28.
  • Grading, ditch work and new drainage pipe installation
     

By June 19:

  • Temporary fencing removed and final site cleanup at various locations
