A section of the American Tobacco Trail in Wake County will be fully closed starting Wednesday, Sept. 2, while crews repair areas damaged by a landslide during Hurricane Helene in 2024. The closure will last through the end of October.
The closure will extend from the Wimberly Road parking area to the entrance of the White Oak Creek Greenway.
During this time, the affected portion of the trail will be completely inaccessible. There are no detours or alternate routes around the construction zone, and trail users should not attempt to go through or around fencing or barricades. Entering the construction area is dangerous and may interfere with repair operations.

All trail users must turn around when they reach the closure:
- From the north: turn around or use the White Oak Creek Greenway, which is currently open only to the White Oak Creek Greenway trailhead at 8232 Green Level Church Road. Learn about the current Town of Cary greenway closure here.
- From the south: turn around at Wimberly Road. The Wimberly Road parking area will be closed to visitors, and parking along the shoulder of Wimberly Road is not allowed.
Alternate access points include:
- New Hill-Olive Chapel Parking Area, 1309 New Hill-Olive Chapel Road, Apex
- White Oak Church Road Parking Area, 1305 White Oak Church Road, Apex
- New Hope Church Road Parking Area, 2584 New Hope Church Road, Cary
- White Oak Creek Greenway entrance, 8232 Green Level Church Road, Cary
Please note: The White Oak Creek Greenway is closed between Green Level Church Road and I-540. This closure is located about 1.5 from the trail’s connection to the American Tobacco Trail, and there is no detour around the construction zone. Get updates on this closure here.
The repair project will include removing unsuitable soils, adding and compacting appropriate replacement soil, rebuilding and stabilizing the bank with native trees and vegetation, enlarging and stabilizing the ditch at the base of the slope, and installing a drainage pipe to direct excess water to the ditch on the opposite side of the trail.
