Employment Process

To view and apply for openings at CCBI, please see the Wake County employment website. CCBI does not accept resumes directly; however, CCBI will receive resumes through the Wake County hiring system. Applicants not selected for a position are encouraged to reapply for future postings. CCBI does not maintain resumes on file for future postings.

Generally, CCBI's selection process follows these steps:

Resumes are submitted electronically by the applicant to Wake County Human Resources.
Wake County Human Resources refers candidates that meet the minimum educational and experience requirements to CCBI.  Routinely, applicants are screened using "preferred" qualifications, rather than the "minimum" qualifications, due to the number of applicants.  Once screened, the selected applicants are forwarded to CCBI for review.
CCBI sends all received applicants a letter (via email) confirming receipt of the resume by CCBI and explaining the elements and expected duration of the selection process.
A preliminary background investigation is conducted that includes a review of the submitted resume, a preliminary criminal records check, a preliminary driver's records check, and/or a review of online social media/internet-related sites.
Applicants selected for an interview will be contacted by CCBI. All applicants will be subject to a reading comprehension assessment and must meet a minimum passing score. The interview process may consist of a written examination, a practical examination, a role-playing exercise, and/or an interview board panel.
Upon successful completion of the interview process, selected candidates will be contacted to request authorization to conduct a background investigation. No background investigation will be conducted prior to notification.
Applicants selected for a background investigation will be required to obtain and submit a certified criminal record check for all counties in each state/country of residence since the age of 16 as well as a certified copy of driving record for each state/country of residence since the age of 16. (For states requiring the submission of fingerprints for the purpose of a criminal background check, CCBI can provide the fingerprint service to the applicant at no cost.)

Applicants selected for a background investigation will also be required to submit official copies of transcripts from any high school and post-high school educational institution attended.

The background investigation will take several weeks to complete. Applicants failing to secure and/or provide the required to documentation in a reasonable time frame may be removed from the selection process.

Upon the completion of a successful background investigation, the applicant will be contacted with a conditional offer of employment.

All applicants must submit to a pre-employment drug screening and a polygraph examination. Applicants for Investigations Division and Laboratory Division positions will additionally be required to complete a psychological fitness-for-duty examination.  All pre-employment testing will be conducted by a provider chosen by CCBI. (Candidates maintaining a current law enforcement certification will additionally be required to complete a physical examination in accordance with standards set forth by the North Carolina Sheriffs' Education and Training Standards Commission).
