Second Street Place

Second Street is Wake County’s emergency drop-in shelter, providing a safe and welcoming space for individuals experiencing homelessness. Located in Raleigh, Second Street Place is a critical part of the County’s homelessness response system, offering low-barrier access to shelter when it is needed most.

Temporary Closure for Renovations (April–December 2026)

To better serve the community, Second Street Place will undergo renovations beginning April 2026. Planned improvements include:

  • Enhanced safety and security features
  • Expanded and more flexible shelter space
  • ADA-accessible bathrooms and showers
  • Dedicated wellness and service areas
  • Improved building systems and infrastructure
     

The goal is to reopen a modernized, more functional facility by December 2026.

During the temporary closure, Wake County is working with community partners to ensure continued access to shelter. Alternative shelter will be located at 3211 Bramer Drive, Raleigh, with additional community partner sites available during the white flag season.

  • Open to men and women experiencing homelessness
  • Available during White Flag nights
  • Connection to community resources and services
  • Support from trained staff and partner organizations
  • No prior referral required for emergency access
