Parent helping children with homework

Family engagement is key to ensuring that youth are successful in school and life. The Wake County Out-of-School Time (OST) Network has identified resources for families to use as they engage their children in OST programming.

Choosing the Right Program for Your Family

When selecting an Out-of-School Time (OST) program, it's important to choose one that is high-quality, safe, and aligned with your family's needs and values. Use the guiding questions below to help you make an informed decision:

  • What is the mission or purpose of the program?
  • Are there participation fees? Is financial assistance available?
  • What opportunities or expectations are there for family involvement in the program?
  • Does the program accommodate youth with special needs?
  • What types of activities are offered (e.g., STEM, arts, academic support, recreation)?
  • Is the facility clean, safe, and well-organized?
  • Is there access to outdoor or green space?
  • Do families or youth have input into program planning, content, or scheduling?
  • Are staff members consistently interacting with youth in meaningful ways—both through activities and supportive conversations?
  • What kind of training and experience do staff members have?
