Community Outreach and Impact
Expanding public participation, strengthening nonprofit capacity, and addressing discrimination through the County's non-discrimination ordinance.
The Community Outreach and Impact teams serve as Wake County's bridge between government and the community. Ensuring residents, nonprofits, and partners have meaningful opportunities to inform, influence, and support County initiatives.
Public Input & Participation
Knowing when and how to involve residents leads to better ideas, stronger relationships, and programs that better serve the community. Providing County departments with frameworks and guidance to engage the public in meaningful ways will prove to be impactful. When residents have a voice, the County makes better-informed decisions and strengthens trust with the community.
Nonprofit Capacity Building
Nonprofit organizations play a vital role in meeting human service needs across Wake County, often filling service gaps where County capacity is limited. To strengthen this sector, OOE will work to better understand needs and develop strategic partnership to support the County’s relationship with nonprofits that serve a public purpose and their ability to deliver impactful public programs on behalf of the County.
Non-Discrimination Ordinance
The Wake County Board of Commissioners adopted an ordinance in 2021 prohibiting discrimination in public accommodations and employment. It went into effect on Feb. 1, 2022, and applies only to the unincorporated areas of the county outside of city or town limits, unless a Wake County municipality independently adopts it. If you live in one of these areas and want to report how a business or employer discriminated against you, please fill out the complaint form.
Business Engagement
Leveraging business partnerships to advance the County's mission, strengthen upward mobility, and expand economic opportunity.
Small Business Outreach
Small businesses serve as almost half of private sector employment, create jobs, and help lower regional unemployment rates and is a catalysis for economic mobility. While open and available to all, this program will help strengthen the capacity of small businesses and enhance coordination between Wake County Departments that manage construction, goods and services contracts. These increased efforts should result in more small businesses being able to accurately respond to RFPs and bid opportunities.
Corporate Engagement
Corporations and large businesses are integral drivers of our economic ecosystem. From job creation to philanthropy, corporations play an important role for inclusive prosperity of all Wake County residents. With the development of a coordinated framework with corporations, the County can strategically maximize efforts to improve upward mobility, advance community-centered philanthropy, and expand workforce development for public purposes. All residents, regardless of zip code, will have a chance to improve their economic, educational, social, or professional standing.
