The 2025-2026 school season is here! From the classroom to off campus, the Wake County Sheriff’s Office has five tips to help keep your students safe.

1. Report Suspicious Activity
   Safety starts with you. See something suspicious? Say something! Reach out to your School Resource Officer (SRO) or a trusted adult. We are trained to help de-escalate situations and help with safety issues.
2. Social Media Threats
   The Wake County Sheriff’s Office takes all threats seriously. Never post about harming someone or something on social media. Real or not, students will be held responsible. That means disciplinary action or even criminal charges.
3. Get to Know Your SRO
   School Resource Officers – or SRO’s – are here to help! The Sheriff’s Office has more than 20 SRO’s in local schools. Our goal is to prevent crimes on campus, respond to emergencies, and connect with students. Get to know your SRO!
4. Back-to-School Boards
   We know parents love to post about their children’s milestones…but do it safely! Never share your child’s age, school, or teacher’s name. Posting overly personal and identifying information can also be misused by predators and scammers.
5. School Bus Safety
   Always look both ways before crossing the street. Wait for the bus to come to a complete stop and for the doors to open before getting on board. Drivers, obey all traffic signs and signals to help protect students. Remember you must yield to the right of way for buses and students. Always stop for a stopped school bus. When you’re driving on a two-lane or four-lane roadway without a median separation, all traffic from both directions must stop.
