The Identification Division is comprised of the Criminal Identification Unit and Civil Identification Unit.
Criminal Identification Unit
The Criminal ID Unit (CID) is comprised of 4 squads in a 24/7 detention facility. Each squad works 12-hour shifts, rotating nights and days monthly. The Criminal Identification Unit is tasked with fingerprinting, running criminal histories, photographing, and collecting DNA of individuals charged under applicable laws in Wake County. Our agency is responsible for providing these services for all 12 cities in Wake County, estimating around 21,000 people processed per year.
Civil Identification Unit
The Civil ID Unit provides civil fingerprinting services and arrest record checks for the public at the Wake County Detention Center. There is a wide range of purposes for what we provide fingerprinting services for, allowing the Bureau to have assisted about 15,000-16,000 people per year.
