Celebrating Registered Environmental Health Specialist Week: Cristofer LeClair

Cristofer LeClair, Environmental Consultant in Wake County’s Environmental Health and Safety Division, joined the County six years ago. Since then, he has inspected hundreds of facilities, making sure our residents enjoy safe and well-regulated environments.

Cristofer is one of those people who works quietly behind the scenes yet delivers work that is crucial and essential to everyone’s health and well-being. As a health and sanitation inspector, he covers a wide range of facilities across the county. On any given day, his inspections might take him to food establishments, childcare centers, hospitals, nursing homes, local confinement facilities, residential care facilities, public swimming pools, hotels and even tattoo parlors.

“A lot of people think that health inspectors just regulate food establishments, but we do so much more,” he said. “Most people think we are out to get them, but that is not the case. We strive to build rapport and provide guidance to increase overall compliance.”

For Cristofer, the most rewarding part of the job is educating the public on food safety and providing guidance.

“The work we do is very gratifying,” he said. “Working with facility managers and directors and noticing improvement on subsequent inspections or working with them to make their processes easier is very fulfilling. It is motivating to know that our job directly impacts public health.”

Cristofer graduated with a B.S. in Biology from East Carolina University. Outside of work, he enjoys walking his two German Shepherds, Bonsai and Benji, on local trails. He’s also a dedicated “plant dad” with a substantial orchid collection and he likes to spend time with friends on the weekends.

During Registered Environmental Health Specialist Week, we celebrate professionals like Cristofer whose dedication helps keep our community safe, healthy and thriving.
