100% of donations go directly to helping families stay cool
With record-breaking temperatures already hitting Wake County, the risk of heat-related illness and death is dangerously real, especially for older adults, children and people with medical conditions. That’s why Wake County is urging the public to act now by donating air conditioners, fans or money to support its seasonal relief program, Cool for Wake.
Last year, Wake County EMS responded to 250 heat-related emergency calls, a powerful reminder that heat can be dangerous and deadly. Older adults, children and those with medical conditions are especially at risk in homes without air conditioning.
Every summer, we see the heartbreaking reality of what extreme heat can do, especially to our older adults, children and neighbors with health challenges,” said Shinica Thomas with the Wake County Board of Commissioners. “The fact is, not everyone in Wake County has the means to stay cool, and that puts lives at risk. We’re asking our community to step up and help save lives.”
This summer, Cool for Wake is focused on collecting new or gently used window or portable air-conditioning units and financial contributions. While new fans are still accepted, air-conditioning units and monetary donations are now the most critical needs.
Every dollar donated goes directly to families in Wake County. Wake County Government covers all administrative costs so that 100% of your donation goes where it’s needed most, into the hands of people trying to survive the heat.

To donate gently used or new air-conditioning units or fans, call 919-212-7083. Fans must be in working condition.

Cool for Wake runs from May through September. The program is powered by the generosity of donors and a partnership with the Raleigh Regional Association of Realtors Giving Network, which is donating 40 window units this year.
