Wake County announces reopening of West Regional Library following major renovations

West Regional Library, one of Wake County Public Libraries’ busiest branches, will reopen its doors to the public on Monday, Oct. 27, after months of highly anticipated renovations. The updates bring a fresh look and enhanced amenities to the library, which first opened in 2006 and serves residents of western Cary and parts of Morrisville.

“West Regional Library has been a cornerstone of this community for years, and we look forward to welcoming visitors back to this new and improved space,” said Wake County Commissioner Cheryl Stallings. “These renovations will ensure the library continues to be a place where people of all ages can learn and connect for many years to come.”

The library has been closed since early January. When visitors return, they’ll see:

  • Improved study and work spaces
  • A teen nook
  • An updated youth program room and children’s area
  • Courtyard seating and boosted Wi-Fi
  • An enhanced sensory room to support inclusive experiences

The renovations also feature new public art by renowned North Carolina artist Thomas Sayre, whose work is known across the region, including the iconic “gyre” circles at the N.C. Museum of Art. Sayre was the original artist behind the library’s inverted cairns in the courtyard, and this new addition expands upon his initial concept.

In addition to the visible changes, the renovation also addressed aging building systems, including the installation of high-efficiency LED lighting, upgraded HVAC equipment and improvements to shelving, finishes, furnishings and support spaces.

In 2024, before the closure, West Regional Library was one of the system’s busiest locations, with:

  • 300,453 visits (second highest among all locations)
  • 647,308 items checked out (second highest among all locations) with 75% being youth materials
  • 153,675 hours of Wi-Fi use (second highest)
  • 22,993 program attendees across 714 programs
