Wake County Board of Commissioners elects new chair, vice chair

The Wake County Board of Commissioners tonight elected its new leaders for the year ahead. Commissioner Matt Calabria will serve as chair of the board, and Commissioner Don Mial will assume the vice chair role.

The votes followed the official swearing in of Commissioners Susan Evans, Shinica Thomas and Tara Waters, as well as Register of Deeds Tammy Brunner and Soil and Water District Supervisors Thomas Dean and Reese Wamsley.

“I’m grateful that my fellow commissioners trust me to lead this team of dedicated public servants over the next year,” said Chair Calabria. “Together, we will advance the county’s new strategic plan while increasing affordable housing, enhancing public safety and expanding spaces like parks and public libraries that enrich the lives of our residents.”

Chair Calabria was first elected to the board in 2014, and he began his first term as chair in December 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic. He currently chairs the county’s Growth, Sustainability and Economic Strength Committee. He is also vice chair of the Public Safety Committee and a member of the Affordable Housing Committee.

Vice Chair Mial joined the commission in 2022. He is the current chair of the Public Safety Committee and a member of the Health and Human Services Committee. He also serves as liaison to Wake County’s Juvenile Crime Prevention Council and Local Emergency Planning Committee.

“I look forward to working with my colleagues to address the needs of our growing population,” said Vice Chair Mial. “Wake County is an awesome place to go to school, start a career or raise a family, and we want to maintain that high quality of life for residents now and decades to come.”

Both leaders will serve in these roles through December 2025. Learn more about the Wake County Board of Commissioners and view upcoming meeting schedules and agendas on our website.
