Wake County Commission signs property tax resolution to keep authority local

The Wake County Board of Commissioners voted unanimously Monday afternoon to adopt a resolution opposing a legislative proposal to curtail local taxing authority.

The resolution asks lawmakers not to change state law to restrict counties' authority to set property tax rates.

“We strongly encourage the North Carolina General Assembly to continue to let local boards address local priorities,” said Board Chair Don Mial. “Here in Wake County, we are directly accountable to our residents, and we understand the unique needs and priorities of our growing community better than anyone else.”

Preserving local authority ensures counties have the financial flexibility to support essential programs and services, respond swiftly to emergencies and adjust to evolving economic and political landscapes.

The property tax is Wake County's largest and most stable source of revenue. It funds about 75% of the county's annual budget and makes financing new schools, libraries, fire stations and other infrastructure possible.

If counties lose the ability to set their own tax rate, it could require significant service reductions and scaling back much-needed capital improvement plans. This would negatively impact how growing counties like Wake meet the demands of an increasing population.
