Wake County goes red for heart health this February

american heart month

Every 34 seconds heart disease claims the life of someone in our country, making it the leading cause of death nationwide. This February, Wake County is taking action by launching a month-long campaign for American Heart Month, aimed at raising awareness and empowering residents to take charge of their heart health.

“This month is a great opportunity for all of us to take stock of our health and make small changes that could have a big impact,” said Wake County Commissioner Vickie Adamson. “By coming together for American Heart Month, we can help prevent heart disease and create a healthier future for every resident in Wake County.”

Libraries with Heart Initiative Expands to 23 Locations

Wake County Public Libraries and the American Heart Association announced last week that they are expanding the Libraries with Heart program to all regional and community library locations. The program allows residents to check out blood pressure monitors to monitor their health and reduce the risk of heart disease and stroke.

Heart Healthy Trails

During February, Wake County Parks, Recreation and Open Space is partnering with Wake County Public Health to feature a special “heart healthy” trail at each of its parks and preserves.

Visitors can look for special signs at trailheads and follow along for heart health information and tips.

Know Your Risks and Save a Life

It’s important to know the facts about heart disease. While you can’t change factors like age or family history, you can lower your risk by focusing on what you can control:

  • Managing blood pressure and cholesterol levels
  • Preventing or managing diabetes
  • Avoiding tobacco use
  • Eating a healthy diet
  • Getting regular physical activity

According to the American Heart Association, heart attack symptoms include:

  • Chest discomfort, such as pressure, squeezing, fullness or pain
  • Discomfort in the arms, neck, jaw or stomach
  • Shortness of breath
  • Cold sweats
  • Nausea or lightheadedness
  • Women may experience additional symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, shortness of breath, and back or jaw pain.

  • Wednesday, Feb. 25, at 10:30 a.m. at Richard B. Harrison Community Library, 1313 New Bern Ave., Raleigh
  • Thursday, Feb. 26, at 10 a.m. at Fuquay-Varina Community Library, 271 Bramblehill Drive, Fuquay-Varina

The tooth fairy will make a special appearance at events on Feb. 17, 24 and 26.

Each participating child will receive a “Books & Smiles” kit, including a toothbrush, toothpaste and dental-themed goodies. Families will also receive resources for maintaining oral health.

The Books & Smiles program is based on the American Academy of Pediatrics’ Brush, Book, Bed campaign, which encourages healthy bedtime routines for children.
