Art, movies and more planned at libraries across the county
Wake County Public Libraries will “Celebrate Black Brilliance” in February and beyond through a special series of programs honoring Black creativity, history and culture. With free events for children, teens and adults, there’s something for everyone to enjoy while engaging with Black artists, authors, filmmakers and more.

A Day in the Life of an Illustrator with Dare Coulter
Recipient of the 2024 Coretta Scott King Illustrator Award, Dare Coulter is an award-winning sculptor, artist, muralist and illustrator. Join us for an engaging presentation as Coulter shares a glimpse into her creative process and day-to-day life.

Meet the Artists of Drinking Gourd Gallery
Throughout February, talented artists from Drinking Gourd Gallery will showcase their work at various libraries. Chat with artists and view their diverse artwork – featuring mediums from watercolors and acrylics to crayons and spray paint. “Black Barbie”: Documentary Screening and Virtual Q&A
“Black Barbie” celebrates the momentous impact three Black women at Mattel had on the evolution of the Barbie brand. Through these charismatic insiders’ stories, the documentary tells the story of how the first Black Barbie came to be in 1980, examining the importance of representation and how dolls can be crucial to the formation of identity and imagination. Watch the documentary Wednesday, March 12, at Cary Theater, then join library staff on Sunday, March 16, for a virtual chat with writer and director Lagueria Davis. Registration is required.
Writing Workshops with Kaitlan Farrior
Kaitlan Farrior is an emerging literary voice and independent author from North Carolina whose words inspire reflection, healing and hope. She shares her passion for creativity and self-improvement through workshops, fostering community and personal growth.
- Imposter Syndrome: The Love Within
These interactive workshops are designed to help adults confront and overcome imposter syndrome through the lens of psychology and self-compassion. Participants will engage in guided writing exercises that promote self-reflection, identify personal strengths and enhance self-worth. Two workshops are available, and registration is required. - Fried Green Tomatoes Inspired Workshop: Writing for Change
Inspired by the beloved story “Fried Green Tomatoes,” these workshops will explore how personal stories can serve as powerful agents of change. Workshops will take place at five libraries. Registration is required.
Celebrate Black Cinema
In honor of Black History Month, join library staff Tuesday nights at Cary Regional Library to view contemporary films destined to be classics. Films include “Summer of “Soul,” “BlacKkKlansman” and “American Fiction.” Registration is recommended.
