Each fall, the N.C. State Fair turns Wake County into a destination for food lovers. From creative deep-fried treats to local specialties, the fair showcases flavors that draw nearly a million visitors every year. Wake County inspectors are on hand to ensure food is safe, so fairgoers can enjoy every bite with peace of mind.

“Our inspectors play an important role in keeping the fair safe,” said Susan Evans, chair, Wake County Board of Commissioners. “Our work happens behind the scenes, but it’s all about keeping people healthy and happy. When fairgoers dig into their favorite dishes, they can do it with confidence, knowing safety comes first.”

From Oct. 9 to 16, a team of 43 inspectors will evaluate about 150 food stands, food trucks and tents before the fair opens on Oct. 16. Each vendor must pass health and safety checks before receiving a permit to serve food at the fair. The Wake County Environmental Health and Safety team will conduct these inspections and issue temporary permits to vendors who meet all required standards.

During the inspections, the Wake County team ensures that food is stored at the correct temperatures, equipment used for food handling is clean and functioning properly, and that booths, food tents and trucks are sanitary. Inspectors also make sure that food handlers follow proper hygiene practices. All these precautions are necessary to protect the community from foodborne illnesses.

Temporary Food Establishment permits may be required for food or drink vendors operating at fairs, festivals or similar events. Wake County has developed a guide to help N.C. State Fair vendors with the application process, along with a dedicated phone line for questions at 919-664-7700.

In 2024, more than 998,000 people attended the N.C. State Fair. This year, from Oct. 16–26, the State Fair promises to be just as delicious. Now in its 173rd year, the State Fair remains one of North Carolina’s most beloved traditions, offering food, fun and memories for the whole family.
