Wake County’s Beyond the South Wake Landfill Study is a long-term planning effort focused on exploring future waste management strategies and community priorities as the South Wake Landfill approaches the end of its operational life.
The County is introducing a new project website designed to make information easy to find, understand and share — and to create clear opportunities for residents to stay informed and get involved throughout the study process. A public survey is also available for the next three months to gather input.
“This study is about planning ahead and listening closely,” said Wake County Commissioner Shinica Thomas. “We know residents care deeply about how waste is managed today and how decisions made now can shape the future. The Beyond the South Wake Landfill Study gives us a framework to explore options thoughtfully, transparently and with community input at the center.”
A forward-looking study with community input at its core
Over the next several years, Wake County will evaluate a range of long-term waste management approaches, including operational, environmental, financial and community considerations. The study does not make decisions on its own; instead, it provides data, analysis and public feedback to help inform future County discussions and actions.
Public participation will play an important role throughout the study. Residents will have multiple opportunities to learn more, ask questions and share perspectives as work progresses.
The new Beyond the South Wake Landfill Study website serves as the central hub for the project. Visitors can:
- Learn about the study purpose, timeline and key milestones
- Review frequently asked questions and background information
- Find updates on upcoming engagement opportunities
- Sign up for project updates and notifications
As the study moves forward, the website will continue to be updated with new information, materials and ways to participate.
