Wake County launches planning process to shape the future of library services

Wake County Public Libraries has kicked off its Organizational Roadmap planning process, a bold initiative to shape the future of library services in Wake County. When complete, this roadmap will guide how the system supports the community—from collections and programs to technology and spaces—ensuring libraries remain vibrant, welcoming and responsive to evolving needs.

“Community involvement is the cornerstone of this process,” said Wake County Commissioner Vickie Adamson. “Libraries belong to everyone, and this roadmap will reflect the voices, ideas and priorities of the people we serve. Together, we will continue to spark curiosity, foster learning and strengthen community connections for generations to come.”

What is an Organizational Roadmap?

An Organizational Roadmap is a strategic plan that sets priorities and direction for the library system over the next several years. It identifies what services, programs and resources matter most to the community and outlines how Wake County will invest in spaces, technology and collections to meet those needs.

Thanks to community input, Wake County Public Libraries has already expanded collections to reflect diverse cultures and languages, introduced programs that bring neighbors together, launched tech help sessions and added online learning tools like Udemy and Tutor.com.

In 2024, Wake County voters approved a $142 million bond to strengthen and modernize libraries. This investment will bring six new libraries, two major expansions and six renovations, creating spaces that open doors to learning and community connection.

Now, WCPL is taking the next step: creating an Organizational Roadmap that will serve as a blueprint for the future.
