Wake County to open emergency shelter ahead of winter storm

Due to the anticipated impacts of the winter storm, Wake County will open an emergency shelter at Southeast Raleigh Magnet High School, located at 2600 Rock Quarry Road, Raleigh, at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 31.

This shelter is a good option for residents who lose power and need a safe, warm place to stay until electricity is restored.

Individuals taking shelter should bring:

  • Prescription medications
  • Special-needs items, such as eyeglasses, contact lens solution and hearing aid batteries
  • Extra clothing
  • Items for infants and young children, including formula, diapers and bottles
  • Cash
     

The shelter is pet friendly. Pet owners should bring all items needed for their pet’s care, including medications, crates, leashes, pet food, cat litter and litter pans.

White Flag Shelters
In addition, White Flag emergency shelters are open. These locations help unhoused residents stay warm, dry and safe during hazardous winter conditions.

The following shelters are active for this weather event:

  • First Baptist Church, 99 N. Salisbury St., Raleigh – Primary overnight shelter for women
  • South Wilmington Street Center, 1420 S. Wilmington Street, Raleigh – Primary overnight shelter for men
  • Oak City Cares, 1430 S. Wilmington St., Raleigh – Overflow shelter for men
  • Salvation Army, 1863 Capital Blvd., Raleigh – Shelter for families
  • Healing Transitions, 4011 Capital Blvd., Ste. 109, Raleigh – Emergency shelters where first responders, law enforcement and EMS can transport men and women
  • Second Street Shelter, 5010 Second St. Raleigh - Overflow shelter for men
