Wake County plans for major renovations to Historic Oak View County Park

Wake County is moving forward with a significant renovation project that will enhance visitor experiences and preserve the historic character of Historic Oak View County Park in east Raleigh. Construction is expected to begin in summer 2026, with improvements scheduled for completion by summer 2027.

Located on 27 acres at 4028 Carya Drive, Historic Oak View County Park is one of the County’s most visited cultural sites, offering a glimpse into North Carolina’s agrarian history. The renovations will modernize key areas of the park and improve accessibility and functionality for the thousands of visitors who enjoy it each year.

“This project represents a major investment in protecting and enhancing one of our most beloved historic parks,” said Wake County Commissioner Tara Waters. “Visitors can look forward to a more dynamic, accessible park experience while we continue to honor Oak View’s unique heritage.”

Planned improvements include:

  • Upgraded parking areas, including expanded capacity near the Farm History Center and Livestock Barn, with accommodations for school buses
  • Improved sidewalk connections throughout the park to make it easier and safer for visitors to move between historic sites and facilities
  • A new, modern Bluebird Shelter, redesigned and expanded to provide a more versatile gathering space for programs and events
  • Enhancements to the Farm History Center, including interior and exterior renovations, a refreshed children’s area, a classroom, an improved visitor reception space, updated outdoor gathering areas and a full roof replacement
  • Construction of a new maintenance facility to support daily park operations, featuring staff offices, an outdoor workshop and a secure equipment yard
  • Public art features incorporated throughout the site to create a more engaging and welcoming environment

These improvements were identified in the 2017 Wake County Parks Facility Master Plan Updates and funded through the 2018 Parks, Greenways, Recreation and Open Space bond. At their meeting Monday, Wake County commissioners awarded a construction contract to H.M. Kern Corporation. The project is expected to cost $4.4 million.

Renovation work will be phased to minimize disruption to park visitors. More information will be shared at wake.gov/parks/oakview as timelines are finalized and construction begins.
