Getting tested for sexually transmitted infections just got easier for residents who want to know their status. Wake County Public Health will offer free test kits at multiple locations throughout the county including the Public Health Center in Raleigh.
No appointment or personal information is needed, ensuring a simple and accessible way to get tested.
“We know barriers like cost, transportation and privacy concerns often prevent people from getting tested,” said Wake County Commissioner Tara Waters. “By providing this free service we’re making STI testing more accessible and empowering our community to take proactive steps in protecting their health.”
Testing kits can be picked up Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m.–5 p.m. at these locations:
- Wake County Public Health Center (inside the pharmacy), 10 Sunnybrook Road, Raleigh
- Wake County Departure Regional Center, 5809 Departure Drive, Raleigh
- Wake County Eastern Regional Center, 1002 Dogwood Drive, Zebulon
- Wake County Northern Regional Center, 350 E. Holding Ave., Wake Forest
- Wake County Southern Regional Center, 130 N. Judd Parkway NE, Fuquay-Varina
The process for using the test kit is easy:
- Pick up a kit at any location listed above.
- Activate on the supplier’s website.
- Collect a blood and urine sample.
- Mail the sample using a pre-paid envelope.
- Receive results in 2–5 days once samples arrive.
The kits test for common STIs such as chlamydia, gonorrhea, HIV, syphilis, and trichomoniasis. If someone tests positive, Wake County Public Health can assist with treatment and connect them to the care they need.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, STIs are on the rise nationwide, making regular testing critical for early detection and treatment. In 2023, Wake County saw:
- 6,337 new cases of chlamydia
- 2,488 new cases of gonorrhea
- 311 cases of early syphilis
With this new service, residents can privately know their status earlier and seek care to prevent more infections.
