Wake County turns green to honor veterans and connect them to local services

Wake County is lighting up green from Nov. 4 to 11 in observance of Operation Greenlight. This initiative aims to honor veterans and spotlight the resources available to them right here in our community. With over 55,000 veterans residing in Wake County, the green lights serve as a sign of appreciation and a reminder that support is close by.

“Turning lights green is a visible way to say thank you,” said Vickie Adamson with the Wake County Board of Commissioners. “But what really matters is letting our veterans know we are here to guide them, answer their questions and connect them with the benefits and services they deserve.”

Wake County encourages residents, businesses and community organizations to change one light to green during the week. Participants can share photos of their green lights on social media using #WakeGlowsGreen and #OperationGreenLight.

Services include applying for compensation and pension benefits, accessing Veterans Affairs health care, obtaining burial and survivor benefits, and even helping with everyday perks such as free fishing licenses or special license plates for veterans.

Appointments are free and available to all Wake County residents who have served, their surviving dependents or beneficiaries. The office provides personalized support to make sure veterans and their families can access everything they’ve earned. Visit wake.gov/veterans to learn more.
