Service upgrades expected to be complete by winter 2026

Wake County commissioners have approved plans to move forward with major service improvements to EMS Station 2, located on Noble Road in Raleigh. The original station was built in 1978 to serve the Five Points area. A new building on the site will soon feature an additional ambulance bay, expanded living areas for staff and eco-friendly upgrades.
“As we plan for the future of Wake County, we’re always making sure to account for sustainability and staff wellness,” said Wake County Commissioner Shinica Thomas. “Upgrading Station 2 better positions our EMS system to keep up with the demands of population growth, and it also ensures that the staff we rely on when lives are on the line have the best possible environment, not just to serve others, but to care for themselves.”
The current station measures 1,759 square feet, and two vehicle bays account for almost two-thirds of this space. The upgraded schematics create an additional 2,624 square feet. While some of this space will go toward another vehicle bay, enabling the station to continue responding efficiently to increased call volumes, the new plans also significantly expand staff living areas.
New blueprints include increased dining and living space, a supervisor office, extra storage and a staff wellness room. The wellness room is a private area meant to be used when staff need a quiet moment of reflection or meditation. It can also serve as a lactation space.
The new station is also designed with sustainability in mind. A few of the environmentally conscious features include a solar photovoltaic system, low-flow plumbing fixtures, high-efficiency heat pumps, polished concrete flooring, low-carbon concrete and native, drought-tolerant plant materials.
Now that the schematic designs have been approved, Wake County will move forward with permitting and the public bid process. Construction is expected to begin this fall and be completed by late 2026. By early 2027, EMS units are expected to begin using the station.
