Wake County Veterans Stand Down connects veterans with free support and services

Veteran Saluting

Wake County is home to more than 55,000 veterans. For some, the transition from military to civilian life can bring challenges tied to housing instability, unemployment and health care access.

To help, Wake County is bringing back Veterans Stand Down, a one-day event dedicated to connecting veterans with critical services in one location and at no cost.

“Wake County is committed to supporting veterans long after they return home,” said Don Mial, chair of the Wake County Board of Commissioners. “Veterans Stand Down is designed to remove barriers veterans might be facing by offering free services, meals and support all in one place, with providers ready to take action and help them navigate their next steps.”

Hosted by Wake County Veterans Services in partnership with Veterans Bridge Home and local service providers, the event will take place Saturday, June 6, from 8:30 a.m.–3:30 p.m. at William Peace University.

Veterans attending the event will have free access to:

  • Free breakfast and lunch
  • Showers and hygiene kits
  • Clothing and additional support services
  • Health care screenings
  • VA benefits assistance
  • Pet veterinary services (limited hours: 8:30–11:30 a.m.)
  • Legal aid
  • Employment resources
  • Housing and community support services

Veterans can arrive at any time during the event. No appointment is required to receive services or speak with providers.

The event is open to anyone who has served in the U.S. Armed Forces, regardless of discharge status or length of service. Veterans are encouraged to bring military identification or service-related documents if available, though no identification is required to attend or receive support.

Wake County Veterans Services encourages community members, organizations and advocates to help spread the word so veterans who may need support know this event is available to them.
