Wake County Public Libraries invites readers of all ages to put their creativity to the test in the second annual Bookmark Contest. The contest runs throughout March, and winning designs will be printed and distributed at all 23 Wake County libraries as part of the 2026 Summer Reading Program.
Last year, more than 1,000 people entered the contest, and four winners had their artwork distributed across the county.
“Summer is always a special season at our libraries, and this contest offers a fun way to bring even more people together,” said Wake County Commissioner Tara Waters. “We look forward to seeing readers of all ages showcase their creativity and celebrate their love of reading.”
This year’s Summer Reading Program theme, “Unearth a Story,” underscores the joy of discovery that reading brings. It emphasizes that every person and every community have stories waiting to be found and shared—through books, programs and local knowledge. Participants are encouraged to create bookmarks to celebrate this theme.
The contest is open to all ages, with one winner selected from each of the following categories: ages 3–5, 6–8, 9–12, 13–17 and 18 and older. Artists can pick up an entry form at their local library, and designs must be submitted in person.
Submission Guidelines
- Artwork must be original and free of copyrighted images.
- One entry per person.
- Design must fit within the provided 2-inch-by-8-inch frame on the entry form.
- Only physical entries will be accepted.
- All submissions must be turned in to a Wake County Public Libraries location by 9 p.m. Tuesday, March 31, 2026.
The winner in each category will receive 20 printed copies of the bookmark they design, a printed poster of their design and recognition at a celebratory reception.
