Package Theft Prevention

Package thefts, often referred to as “porch pirate” incidents, can happen quickly. With online shopping on the rise, thieves are taking advantage of unattended packages left at doorsteps. The Wake County Sheriff’s Office wants to help you prevent theft and protect your deliveries.

Ways to Prevent Package Theft:

  • Track deliveries and bring packages inside as soon as possible
  • Schedule deliveries when you’re home or pickup location
  • Ask a trusted neighbor to collect packages if you’re away
  • Install security cameras or a video doorbell to monitor activity at your front door
  • Use lockboxes or package lockers offered by some delivery services
  • Request signature upon delivery whenever possible

If you believe your package was stolen:

  • Check delivery confirmation and look around your property in case it was placed out of sight
  • Contact the delivery service to report the missing package
  • Report the theft to your local law enforcement agency
  • Provide security footage, if possible, to help identify the person(s) responsible

Stay vigilant and let’s work together to prevent porch theft in our neighborhoods.
