High School EMT Course

Overview

Wake County EMS is partnering with Wake County Public Schools to offer an EMT class for eligible high school students.

This course is aligned to the EMT Basic certification available from the North Carolina Office of Emergency Medical Services. The course is also aligned to meet the standards of Emergency Technology 1 and 2 from the Department of Public Instruction. This is a year-long course that spans two consecutive semesters. Upon successful completion of this course, students will be eligible to test for their North Carolina EMT credential.

Work-based learning strategies appropriate for this course include clinical hours. Clinical shifts will be completed during this course. Students will be required to complete 48 hours of clinical hours with a designated EMS agency. This will be scheduled in addition to class days and should not interfere with class.

Program Information

Location: Wake County Emergency Services Education Center, 221 South Rogers Ln., Suite 160, Raleigh, NC 27610
Date Range: School year (August - June)
Calendar: Mondays and Wednesdays
Time: 4 – 7:30 p.m.
Transportation: Students must provide their own transportation.

Eligibility

  • Must be a rising senior or super senior.
  • Must turn 18 by July 1 of participating school year (Provide date of 18 years of age if you are past this deadline).
  • Must be a WCPSS student during fall and spring.
  • Complete English III or equivalent with a passing grade prior to the start of the course.
  • Parent or guardian approval.
  • Students may be selected for the program without a driver’s license; however, failure to have a full provisional driver’s license by January of participating school year may impact the student’s ability to obtain a certification.
  • Preference given to students who demonstrate interest in pursuing EMS as a career and/or have previously participated in youth programs at Wake County EMS.

Application and Selection Process

Students must complete an online application. The application will include:

  • Two recommendations (completed via online form).
    • May be completed by a supervisor, teacher, guidance counselor, CDC etc. (must have at least one academic recommendation).
    • Must be complete by the application deadline.
  • Short essay questions:
    • What is your professional career goal?
    • Why would you like to take this course? Please explain how this course aligns with your career plans/goals.
    • Where do you see yourself in 3 years?

High School Summer Internship

Overview

Wake County EMS offers an internship over the summer for selected high school juniors and seniors during the months of June, July and August.

This internship is aligned to the WCPSS internship standards for hours and obligations. The program will span over the summer months providing a wide variety of opportunities and content. Students will be immersed in our academy, simulations, field trips, specialty classes and ambulance observation shifts. Students will be exposed to the different departments that make our EMS system function each day. The final project will involve a presentation and reflect upon the experiences during the internship.

Upon successful completion of this internship, students will have 120 hours and may be eligible for one credit hour at participating high schools.

  • Must be available during the months of June, July and August.
  • Must have transportation on-site and off-site.
  • Parental or guardian approval.
  • Must complete the 120-hour program, including the final project presentation.
  • Preference given to students who demonstrate interest in pursuing EMS as a career and/or have previously participated in youth programs at Wake County EMS.
