Professional Development

We have an extensive training and development program for both the experienced provider as well as recent EMS graduates working in our system. All continuing education and recertification for the system is coordinated through the Division of Professional Development, our own in-house educational institution certified by the NC Office of Emergency Medical Services.   

All of our educational opportunities meet the continuing education guidelines required by the NC OEMS and National Registry of EMTs. Our personnel receive more than 40 hours of educational opportunities each year, well over the hours required by the State.   

Wake County EMS uses Cornerstone for a learning management system, records maintenance, compliance tracking and e-learning.   

Wake County EMS employs five training chiefs are responsible for: 

  • All in-house training and development for field and administrative staff 
  • Curriculum development 
  • Development, production and management of e-Learning courses 
  • Re-credentialing  
  • Medical simulation program 
  • Employee orientation/Academies 
  • Records management 
  • Quality assurance 
  • Student and observer clinicals and ride-a-longs 
  • Initial paramedic education 

All training chiefs hold multiple instructor credentials and are certified as either a Level I or Level II Instructor through the NC EMS. They report directly to the deputy director of Professional Development.
