North Wake HHW Facility – Service Update

Thank you for your continued patience as we work to restore full operations at the North Wake Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) Facility. Below is a summary of the ongoing recovery efforts, current service options, and helpful disposal alternatives.

Post-Fire Recovery Timeline
Following the fire in January 2025, Wake County has taken the following steps:

  • January–February: Investigation into cause of fire and insurance inspections
  • March: Waste removal and soil testing (results showed no runoff from the site)
  • April–May: Building cleanup and disposal of sump water; additional insurance review
  • June–August: Request for Proposals (RFP) issued for demolition; planning for a new facility began
  • September–October: Demolition contract initiated
  • October–December: Demolition of old facility continues; review of new building design
  • 2026: Finalize new facility design, begin bidding process; full 6-day operation to resume once complete

Temporary Collection Plan at North Wake
Due to NC Department of Environmental Quality (NC DEQ) regulations, temporary HHW collection is limited to Saturdays only at North Wake. All materials must be packed and transported off-site the same day, and space limitations prevent additional days of operation at this location.

Alternative Disposal Options for Common Items
Many materials can be safely disposed of outside of HHW facilities:

  • Latex Paint: Let it dry out completely, then dispose with regular household trash
  • Batteries: Drop off at these participating retailers:
    • Batteries Plus
    • Home Depot (select locations)
    • Lowe’s (select locations)
    • Any retailer selling lead-acid batteries (required to accept returns)
